Welcome
Welcome to the Schofield website, the aim is to be informative and interesting, however its priority is to buy Scrap metal for recycling, here at our Huddersfield site we have a constant requirement for all grades of ferrous and non ferrous metal, elsewhere on our website you will find descriptions and photos of most of the grades that we handle, there are also photos and descriptions of the vehicles we use for collections and deliveries, we can however call on hiabs, low loaders and arrange collection through third parties (usually free in the Huddersfield area) of small lots, hopefully this information will help you to make decisions regarding the disposal of any metal you might have, also you could look at the FAQ page, the answers to our most common queries are there, failing that get in touch with us.

What sort of materials do we want to buy? Almost any scrap metal really, if you are an engineering works with a regular output of swarf, cuttings or other material and need a really reliable skip exchange service and very prompt flexible payment terms, you want to deal with friendly people who help and give advise with problems, give us a call and try us out.

Demolition contractor with large quantities of oversize? No problem, we have two eight wheel rolonofs with experienced operators covering Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. Our vehiclesare in Leeds , Bradford and wakefield on a daily basis. At the beginning of the contract the driver gives you his mobile number and from that point on you can track the vehicles process, we never say that we will turn up knowing that we cant make it, you will always get a call explaining the situation, whether it be a breakdown or traffic hold up, experience tells us that telling the customer exactly what is happening is the best policy.

Are you a tradesman, plumber, electrician, builder or DIYer? All these trades have metal, usually valuable non ferrous, at some point, give us a call and get a price or just call up and see us, if you deal with another company, give us a try, it usually means more money in your pocket, we buy all non ferrous grades and will give you advise how to prepare your metal to realise the best price. To find us go to the find us page, we are off the beaten track up on the hill above Slaithwaite, it's a lovely part of the area and makes a pleasant ride out on a Saturday morning.

Why sell to J B Schofield ? Well we believe that we are the best scrap metal merchant in the huddersfield and halifax area. We haven't rested on our laurels over the last 130 years, our 7 acre site meets all the latest environmental requirements, we are constantly investing and upgrading to make the site a better place to work in or visit, we have a reputation for running one of the cleanest, tidiest recycling sites around, regularly swept concrete and tarmac surfaces means less chance of punctures or damage to your vehicle. Weighing takes place on a new 50 tonne digital weighbridge, we use the latest I.T systems and software to speed up customer turnaround, payment terms are second to none.

We can handle large low loaders and have on site craneage capable of handling up to 22 tonnes in a single lift, conversely, domestic customers or trades men in cars and vans are welcomed and looked after. Curtain siders, box vans or containers if somebody got it in, we will get it out, if you have transport problems get in touch we will do our best to help you, at the very least we will usually point you in the right direction.

So far all we have looked at is purchases, this is because the primary aim of the site is to buy in the current economic situation selling is relatively easy (getting paid is a different matter). Most of the grades that we supply are detailed in the sales products pages, steelworks and export grades are of little interest to anyone other than steelworks and exporters, the foundry grades though are sold closer to home. We supply very high quality broken heavy cast iron, machinery cast, G17 and SG iron, our hand cut short profile steel is of the highest quality with a reputation second to none for reliability and quality, we are probably the only recycling company that carries large stocks of these specialist grades ready for immediate delivery, our stock piles are legendary within the trade.

Also of interest to the foundry industry is the breaking service that we offer, we will collect your oversize castings, pourdowns or mould boxes, break them and deliver back to you in the required size for a fixed price per tonne, anything that cant be broken because it is too thick or maybe SG we will buy at a competitive price. This is a service we have offered successfully for over 30 years, if it interests you give us a call.

For the environmentalists among you our credentials are second to none, being licensed and policed by the environment agency you wouldn't expect it to be otherwise, EA visits rarely solicit anything other than some friendly advise as our visit reports over the years prove, we have though been proactive over the years and have made improvements voluntarily, our environmental policy is very impressive detailing commitments to the planting, the upkeep of dry stone walls, constant painting of property and fences, drainage and hard standing upgrades, road vehicles are renewed regularly with new low emission, low noise models, we also try to keep noise and dust to a minimum for the benefit of our near neighbours. The other side to all this investment is a need to be profitable, as a business we have been recycling and making a living from recycling for 130 years, in the process we put money into the local community via wages to the workforce and money spent with local suppliers then of course tax and national insurance contributions to central government, compare our record with government recycling schemes that cost tax or rate payers money.

We have included informative pages containing the company history, we are after all a sixth generation family firm and have been trading and recycling at Greenhead since 1876, for old wagon enthusiasts we have included lots of information and photos of past vehicles, particularly Fodens and ERFs along with a historic overview of the firms transport operation as far back as the horse and cart.

Another firm operating from the site is Schofield Reclamation, contrary to what the name might suggest this company now concentrates on gritting, being one of the areas leading independent gritter operators since 1973 again we have included a page with some interesting material there, including winter photos from the 1970s and 80s details for the vehicle enthusiast on all our gritters, most of them looking very smart with new paint jobs.

After all that, please have a browse, I hope you find the site informative, if you have any queries, please get in touch, if you have information regarding the company or family history that you think will be of interest send an e mail or give me a call, are the details with the historic vehicles wrong or do you want to know more, do you know anyone with metal to dispose of or someone who is not getting a good deal? Pass our details on or get in touch and give me their name and let me follow it up, if it's a successful lead it could benefit all concerned. Are you interested in the photographs, I have possibly 60,000, over half of which are H.G.Vs pictured over the last 25 years and hopefully subject to time constraints I will add more and update the site regularly and try my best to keep it informative so keep having a look.Best regards Mark Schofield
